Have you ever wonder if you could use the SSH machine you have access as a VPN or actually Proxy Server without any configuration or module installation? Well that is possible! as long as you got SSH access over any Linux Server you can use that machine internet to surf the web. This can be considered as a Proxy to escape and bypass firewall restrictions or open blocked websites if there are any in your country or area!
Well what you need to do is just 3 simple step before connecting to your SSH server through PUTTY! To do this Open Your Putty and Enter the Connection details just like how you do it in other times! like image below :
Now click on tunnels tab from the left side menu. in Source Port type your desired Port number! if you don’t have any idea just use same with mine which is 8080. Then make sure in Destination section you’ve choose Dynamic and then click on ADD. You will a Dynamic 8080 Port will be listed in Forwarded Ports section. Then just click on Open and Login to your SSH server with the same username and password you had.
Once you are logged in you’ve almost done every required Step! that’s it! you’ve made a tunnel to your SSH server! now all that is left is to set it as a proxy server to your browser! Let’s say I’m using FireFox ! So I just open the proxy settings for Firefox!
In the Socks configuration type localhost and for the port enter the port which you’ve added into your Putty Tunnel settings! well we used 8080 here.
That’s it! your Identity has been changed to your SSH Server IP details! to confirm that your IP is changed click here.
